The tradition of Ganesh Chaturthi dates back to the Maratha Empire when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj promoted it to foster culture and nationalism. In the 19th century, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak transformed it into a public festival to unite people during British rule.

Ganesh Chaturthi is also referred to as Vinayagar Chaturthi in South India and Ganesh Puja in some regions. The festival symbolizes the birth of Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Ganesh Chaturthi begins with the Avahana (invocation) of Lord Ganesha into the idol, followed by Pran Pratistha, which infuses life into the idol using sacred mantras and rituals.

  • Shodashopachara Puja – a ritual worship involving 16 forms of offerings.

  • Uttar Puja – the farewell ritual before immersion, performed with gratitude.

  • Chanting of Ganpati Atharvashirsha, bhajans, and aarti.

  • Offering of Durva grass, Modaks, and red flowers to the deity.
