Introduction to Amarnath Cave

Shri Amarnath Yatra 2026: Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, the Amarnath Temple is one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Each year, thousands undertake a spiritual pilgrimage—the Amarnath Yatra—to witness this divine wonder and seek blessings.

Introduction to Amarnath Cave

About Amarnath Yatra

The Amarnath Yatra is an annual pilgrimage that takes place during the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August). Organized by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), the yatra invites devotees from all walks of life to undertake the sacred journey to the holy cave.

The Ice Lingam (Amarnath Shivlingam)

Mythological Significance of the Amarnath Cave

According to Hindu mythology, it was in the Amarnath cave that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality—the Amar Katha—to Goddess Parvati. To ensure no living being heard the secret, Shiva left behind all companions, including Nandi, the bull, and even set fire to the surroundings. Only two pigeons are believed to have overheard the tale and are said to be immortal, often spotted around the cave even today.

The Ice Lingam (Shivlingam) – A Divine Marvel

One of nature’s most mystical phenomena, the Ice Lingam forms naturally inside the cave due to the freezing of water droplets. The Shivling grows and wanes with the moon’s cycle, an occurrence regarded as a celestial connection with Shiva himself. The stalagmite-shaped Ice Lingam forms as water seeps into the cave and freezes, creating a naturally occurring Shivling. The Ice Lingam represents the cosmic energy of Shiva—formless, timeless, and powerful. Devotees often witness the lingam waxing and waning during the month of Shravan, believed to mirror the lunar phases.
