Gangotri Temple History
The Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha general. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance here to bring River Ganga from the heavens to earth to cleanse the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva received the powerful river in his locks to soften its descent, and from there, the river emerged as the Bhagirathi River at Gangotri.
