What is Shakti Peeth?
When Sati, the first incarnation of Parvati and the wife of Lord Shiva, sacrificed herself at a yagna performed by her father, King Daksha, Shiva was overcome with grief. In his sorrow, he began performing the Tandava Nritya, a divine yet destructive dance, while carrying Sati’s body. To prevent the destruction caused by his intense grief, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into several pieces.
Wherever these body parts fell, sacred temples were established, honoring different manifestations of Shiva and Shakti. These sites, known as Shakti Peethas, became significant Hindu pilgrimage centers.
