Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha:

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha

The word “Nirjala” means “without water.” Nirjala Ekadashi is a highly austere fast where devotees abstain from food and even water for 24 hours. It is believed to bring the combined benefits of observing all 24 Ekadashis in the year.

People search for nirjala ekadashi vrat kab hai or nirjala ekadashi kab ki hai — it always falls during the summer, making it even more challenging and spiritually rewarding.

Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most sacred and rigorous of all Ekadashi fasts. Falling on the 11th lunar day of the waxing (Shukla) phase of the moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha (May–June), it is a day of waterless fasting and deep spiritual reflection.

Meaning of Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat

The Nirjala fast means complete abstinence from food and water for 24 hours. It signifies surrendering the senses and ego, cleansing the mind, and elevating the soul.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Fasting on this day is said to:

  • Wash away all sins

  • Grant longevity, good health, and spiritual merit

  • Help attain Moksha (liberation)

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha (निर्जला एकादशी व्रत कथा)

The legend of Nirjala Ekadashi is closely associated with Bhima, the second Pandava brother.

Bhima loved to eat and found it extremely difficult to observe fasting on Ekadashi days, unlike his brothers and mother Kunti, who followed the rituals strictly. One day, Bhima approached Sage Vyasa and confessed his inability to fast but expressed his desire to receive the spiritual benefits of Ekadashi like his family.

Sage Vyasa advised him that if he couldn’t observe all the 24 Ekadashis in a year, he could still gain the equivalent merit by observing just one Ekadashi — the most austere one — called Nirjala Ekadashi, where not even water is consumed.

Bhima accepted the challenge. On the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, he observed a strict fast without food or water. Though he faced immense thirst, fatigue, and weakness due to the summer heat, he completed the fast with full devotion.

Impressed by his dedication, Lord Vishnu blessed Bhima and declared that those who observe Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat with sincerity will receive the same punya (merit) as performing all 24 Ekadashis.

Hence, Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi.
