Lakshmi Puja Vrat and Rituals
On Diwali, people begin the day by rising early, paying tribute to their ancestors, and worshipping their family deities. As it is Amavasya, many also perform Shradh rituals to honor their ancestors. Traditionally, many pujas are conducted after observing a day-long fast, and devotees of Goddess Lakshmi follow this tradition by fasting throughout the day. The fast is then broken after performing Lakshmi Puja in the evening.
Lakshmi Puja Preparations
On the day of Lakshmi Puja, most Hindu households and offices are decorated with marigold flowers, along with leaves of Ashoka, mango, and banana trees. It is considered auspicious to place Mangalik Kalash, topped with an unpeeled coconut, on both sides of the main entrance.
For the puja, a red cloth should be placed on the right side of a raised platform, where idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are installed after being adorned with silk clothes and jewelry. On the left side of the platform, a white cloth should be placed for the installation of the Navgraha gods. Nine slots of Akshata (unbroken rice) should be prepared on the white cloth for Navgraha installation, while sixteen slots of wheat or wheat flour should be made on the red cloth. The Lakshmi Puja should be conducted with complete rituals, as outlined in the Lakshmi Puja Vidhi.
Lakshmi Puja Muhurat
On Diwali, Lakshmi Puja should be performed during Pradosh Kaal, which begins after sunset and lasts for approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes. Some sources also suggest the Mahanishita Kaal for performing Lakshmi Puja, but this time is generally preferred by the Tantrik community or practicing Pandits. For most people, the Pradosh Kaal Muhurat is recommended.
It is advised not to choose Choghadiya Muhurat for Lakshmi Puja, as those timings are better suited for traveling. The best time for Lakshmi Puja is when Sthir Lagna prevails during Pradosh Kaal. “Sthir” means fixed, indicating stability. If Lakshmi Puja is conducted during Sthir Lagna, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi will remain in the home, making it the most auspicious time for the puja. Vrishabha Lagna is considered Sthir and often coincides with Pradosh Kaal during the Diwali festival.
We provide the exact Lakshmi Puja Muhurat, which includes Pradosh Kaal and Sthir Lagna, while Amavasya is ongoing. The Muhurat times are location-based, so you should select your city before noting down the auspicious Lakshmi Puja timings.
Many communities, particularly Gujarati businessmen, perform Chopda Pujan during Diwali. This involves inaugurating new account books in the presence of Goddess Lakshmi to seek blessings for the upcoming financial year. Diwali Puja is also known as Deepavali Puja or Lakshmi Ganesh Pujan.
