Maa Shailputri – The First Day of Navratri

Maa Shailputri is worshipped on the Navratri 1st day and is the first manifestation of Goddess Durga. She is revered as the daughter of the mountains – “Shail” meaning mountain and “Putri” meaning daughter. Shailputri Mata represents strength, purity, and devotion, making her an essential part of Navratri celebrations.

Maa Shailputri Navratri Pujan 2025

In 2025, Navratri Pujan begins with Maa Shailputri on September 22, 2025, marking the first day of the nine-day festival. Devotees perform Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) and invoke her blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual growth. On this day, people wear yellow or white attire and offer ghee, lotus flowers, and pure water to the goddess. Worshipping Shailputri Mata on the 5th day of Navratri is incorrect as she is honored on day one, whereas goddesses like Katyayani Mata (day 6 Navratri goddess) and Skandamata (day 5 Navratri goddess) are worshipped later.

Origin of Goddess Shailputri

The Shailputri Devi story originates from Hindu scriptures. She is an incarnation of Goddess Sati, the daughter of King Daksha. When Sati immolated herself due to her father’s insult to Lord Shiva, she was reborn as the daughter of the Himalayas – hence the name Maa Shailputri. She is depicted riding a bull, holding a trident (Trishul) in one hand and a lotus in the other, symbolizing power and purity.

She is also associated with Lord Shiva as his consort and mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda) and Lord Ganesha. This is why she is sometimes connected with other Navdurga forms like Maa Chandraghanta, Maa Kushmanda, Maa Katyayani, and Skandamata during Navratri.

Maa Shailputri Devi Life Story
