Masik Shivratri Vrat | मासिक शिवरात्रि व्रत

Masik Shivratri, meaning “Monthly Shivratri,” is a sacred Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated on the 14th night of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) every month. Devotees fast, pray, and perform rituals to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and cleanse their minds and souls.

Masik Shivratri Vrat Katha

Masik Shivratri Vrat Katha (मासिक शिवरात्रि व्रत कथा)

Once upon a time, there lived a poor tribal man named Chitrabhanu. In his previous birth, he was a hunter. On one Shivratri day, unaware of its spiritual significance, he ventured into the forest to hunt food for his family. Despite searching all day, he found nothing. As night fell, he climbed a Bilva (bael) tree near a pond to stay safe and wait for animals.

To stay awake, he plucked the tree’s leaves and dropped them one by one below to pass time. Unknowingly, the leaves fell onto a Shiva Linga that was beneath the tree. Also, due to his hunger and thirst, he fasted the entire day. The constant dropping of bael leaves, his vigil, and fasting all formed a complete Shivratri vrat, though unknowingly.

Pleased with this devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him with a prosperous rebirth. In his next life, he was born as King Chitrabhanu, who remembered his past life and narrated this story to sages. He emphasized the power of observing Shivratri, as it brings peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.

Since then, devotees observe Maha Shivratri with fasting, night vigil, offering bilva leaves, milk, and water to the Shiva Linga, and chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” to receive Lord Shiva’s blessings.
