Somvati Amavasya Vrat Katha
Once upon a time, in a small village, lived a Brahmin with his wife and daughter. The daughter was not only beautiful but also well-mannered and cultured. However, despite being of marriageable age, no suitable match could be found for her. This deeply troubled the Brahmin and his wife.
One day, the Brahmin’s wife took her daughter to a wise saint and shared her sorrow. The saint meditated and then said,
“Your daughter is facing obstacles in marriage due to misfortune in her destiny. The only way to change this is for a married woman (suhaagin) to give her vermilion (sindoor) and other symbols of marriage as a blessing. This will change her fate.”
Hearing this, the Brahmin’s wife made many efforts, but no married woman was willing to do so. Disheartened, she took her daughter to the banks of the Ganga River. Every day, she cleaned the area, helped the temple priest, and served saints and pilgrims selflessly.
One day, impressed by her dedication and service, an elderly married woman held her hand and, of her own will, gifted her sindoor, bangles, and other suhaag items. Miraculously, within a few days, the daughter’s marriage was arranged with a noble and wealthy groom.
Since then, it is believed that observing the Somvati Amavasya Vrat, circumambulating the Peepal tree, and performing charity and rituals on this day bring immense blessings. This vrat is especially observed by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands and for a joyful and prosperous family life.
