Vivah Panchami Vrat Katha
Once upon a time, King Janaka of Mithila was ploughing the land in the royal garden to prepare it for a sacred ritual. At that very moment, he found a divine girl emerging from the womb of the Earth. The child was radiant and full of divine energy. King Janaka accepted her as his own daughter and named her Sita.
From her childhood, Goddess Sita possessed extraordinary power and brilliance. Once, young Sita effortlessly lifted Lord Shiva’s mighty bow — a feat no ordinary person could achieve. Witnessing this, King Janaka took a vow that whoever could lift and string this bow would marry Sita.
Some years later, when Lord Rama, along with his guru Sage Vishwamitra, arrived in Mithila, King Janaka invited him to try and lift the bow. Lord Rama gracefully picked it up and as soon as he tried to string it, the bow broke into two pieces. A divine voice from the heavens proclaimed — “Sita and Rama’s marriage is destined.”
The entire city of Mithila rejoiced. King Dasharatha and his family were invited from Ayodhya, and on the Panchami tithi (fifth lunar day) of the bright fortnight in the month of Margashirsha, the divine wedding of Sita and Rama was celebrated with great grandeur. Since that day, this occasion has been known as Vivah Panchami.
Observing this fast brings marital happiness, harmony, love, and good fortune. Unmarried women who wish to get married soon are especially encouraged to observe this vrat (fast) with full faith and devotion.
